Look Closer

Tsutenkaku tower rising above the rooftops. Layered shop facades on every level. Paper lanterns strung between the buildings.

Cherry blossom branches reaching across the street. Traditional signboards with faded kanji. A staircase you almost want to climb.

The kind of Osaka side street where every level has a different story — and the golden light ties them all together.

Build it piece by piece. Then slide it between your books.

For the Nights You Want to Make Something Instead of Scroll Something

You know those evenings where you close your phone and realise you've been scrolling for two hours with nothing to show for it?

This is the opposite of that.

Shinsekai is one of the most detailed kit in the Nookship collection. 407 pieces. Multiple levels of traditional Osaka shops stacked beneath a Tsutenkaku tower. It unfolds over a weekend or a week of quiet evening sessions. You fit tabs into slots, layer walls, stack rooftops, position tiny lanterns and cherry blossom branches, and wire the LED into a hidden compartment behind the facades.

It's absorbing enough that you lose track of time. And when you're done, you have something you made sitting on your shelf, glowing.

Frequently asked questions

I've never built a book nook before. Is this too hard for me?

These kits are designed so that each step builds on the last. You're not doing anything technically difficult at any single point, you're fitting laser-cut tabs into slots, following a numbered sequence, and gluing things in place. The complexity is in the detail, not in the skill.

If you can follow numbered steps and you're comfortable with a bit of patience, you can build this.

How long does it actually take to build?

Our Shinsekair kit is a detailed build, expect somewhere around 6-8 hours. Some builders finish in focused weekend stretches. Others spread it over a week of evening sessions.

Do I need glue, tools, or batteries?

You'll need craft glue (we recommend a precision-tip PVA or a clear-drying craft adhesive), and 3x AA batteries for the LED light.

What's inside the box?

What if a piece is missing or broken?

Tell us exactly which piece is affected, a photo helps, and we'll work to make it right. That might mean sending a replacement part, providing a workaround, or issuing a refund depending on the situation.

We know how frustrating it is to discover a problem halfway through a build you've already spent hours on. That's exactly why we take this seriously.

8 hrs of enjoyment to assemble. I loved seeing the progression as it came together. You will need glue (use a toothpick to apply) and AAA batteries. You MUST read instructions carefully. At times I questioned the diagram, but look closely and the arrows pointing are spot on. The quality is amazing. The only thing I struggled with for 15 minutes was the placement of the touch pad. I removed the roof and found the right placement, making sure it’s directly under the star. That’s where you need to tap light on and off. I would definitely supervise school-age kids, as the instructions won’t make sense to them. Lastly, all the tools you need are there. A nail file for any rough edges (didn’t need) and 2 little utensils for carefully popping pieces out (very handy). You won’t be disappointed.

This was my first but definitely not my last. It is so cute and was so easy. The pieces fit together snugly , directions are in color and fantastic. I love the little battery door on the back. And the front piece of the diorama snaps on last making it easy to remove if the need should arise to adjust something inside. In my case I did not tape the light’s touch pad securely enough to the ceiling inside for it to sense my finger on top and turn on and off the light. It was a simple 10 second fix. I removed the front piece , added a piece of tape to the lights touch pad on the ceiling and snapped the front piece back on.

I don’t write a lot of reviews but felt compelled to say how much I like this little book nook. It’s well designed, the details are great, and the build itself took me about 8 solid hours (40M, pretty handy and good with instructions). It’s a very satisfying project and the instructions were quite clear and easy to follow. You definitely need to use some super glue for certain pieces, but not because the joins don’t hold well (they do!), but because a few objects just sit on shelves and you’ll want to glue those down per the instructions. The trickiest part is probably getting the light cords situated but that’s because I wanted them clean and organized. I also feel like the cost is great, I’d easily pay more for this product. Overall I’d def recommend this and even plan on getting another version for my wife to build and to add to our own shared bookshelf.

I absolutely love this! It fits perfectly on my bookshelf and looks so cute once it's finished. The glue isn't included, but I used Dollar Tree super glue and it worked great. It was really fun to build—I put on some music, lit a candle, and spent the evening putting it together. The instructions were a little confusing at first, but once I got the hang of it, everything went together pretty smoothly. The materials feel sturdy, and I was surprised by how adorable all the tiny books and accessories are. The light works perfectly with the on/off switch on top. Overall, it's such a cute display piece, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys miniature DIY kits.

As someone assembling a book nook kit for the very first time, I was thoroughly impressed by both the quality and the overall design. The instructions were exceptionally clear and logically organized, making the process approachable even for a beginner. Each component felt thoughtfully crafted, and the precision of the pieces reflected careful attention to detail. The lighting element truly elevates the final result. Once assembled and illuminated, the scene feels magical. Overall, this project was both rewarding and delightful. It surpassed my expectations and is unquestionably a five-star product. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a creative and enchanting addition to their bookshelf. ✨

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife, but I knew she wouldn't be into assembling it. So one night I pulled it out while she was away and my 14 year old daughter helped me put it together. She really got into it, and we had two quality hours working together on it. I'd say an adult should be part of the assembly unless your kid is experienced building detailed models. There were some small parts that needed finesse. But overall the assembly went smooth. The ONLY thing we used that wasn't in the kit was some super glue. I recommend the bottle with a brush in the cap. You just need a little dab on a few of the smaller parts. Most of the kit clicks together with little wood tabs. We were impressed with the detail and the precise laser cuts. I was worried it would be low resolution printed, but all the wood pieces have a durable, detailed print that almost looks like paint. It's also not too glossy, which helps with realism. The finished product is very satisfying, with lots of details to look at. The little light is a warm white color and good for a night light. We will definitely be buying these as gifts.

I enjoyed putting this together, and I found it to be very easy. I used several different types of glue and followed the directions. There were a couple of steps that were a little unclear. It’s adorable and rewarding. This is my first kit and I finished it in a couple of hours.

Yokochō

Customer photo review of Yokochō

Obsessed with these book nook kits! I finished it in a few hours. I wanted to save some for later, but it was so addicting that I couldn’t stop 😅. All the steps are laid out clearly in a little pamphlet so even the technical parts like wiring the lighting is easy. The light itself was a little too cool for me, so I just added some yellow and red plastic film to get the perfect warm tone. The light is turned on and off by a touch sensor that is placed snugly under the wood ceiling. It has been very responsive so far. The material is sturdy to work with (compressed particle or wood board) and is easily sanded to smooth any rough edges. The parts can be inserted into place easily, but be careful about forcing the long and thin pieces. Definitely better to sand the peg and add some glue if needed before inserting into the peg hole. The kit comes with everything you will need except glue, batteries, and tweezers. Had an absolute blast building this and definitely see myself getting one again in the future.

Customer photo review of Yokochō

My wife really wanted to try building one of these so I surprised her with one and it came in 4 days ago; she was so excited. She and our 10 year old put it together and it took 9 hours It does require AAA batteries (not included) for the lighting inside. It is so cute and sits nicely on your book shelf. I definitely would recommend this book nook, was easy to put together, was great craftsmanship, great bonding hobby and wonderful for book obsessed people (my wife reads so much, she has a mini library going on in the bedroom). My wife recommends it and says 5/5 stars! If you’re a beginner, this is great for you.

Customer photo review of Yokochō

This the CUTEST most UNIQUE Book Nook!!! I bought this as an Easter present for my 18 year old daughter who loves to read! It did take her some time to put together, but well worth it. Instructions were not the best, but doable. It was the perfect size, not too little and not too big. The light in it lights up perfectly so you can see all details inside. So cool that you just touch the top part just behind the area where the door is and it turns on and off. The only part that was wrong with this product was the back wasn't cut in the right place to house the battery pack so it's just hanging out of it. Basically it was cut on the bottom left and it should have been the bottom right where the built in box for the battery pack is located. Is that a huge problem? Not really as you are putting it in between a bunch of books and you can't see it from the front. I'm giving it a 5 because overall it's VERY cute, unique and just the coolest thing!

Customer photo review of Yokochō

This little book nook is SO CUTE and fun. This is my first one of these but it will not be my last. I love the lighted feature so much. The directions could have used a little more explanation, especially regarding the light kit, but I figured it out. I didn't realize I needed glue and I found a review that used clear Elmer's glue. While that worked ok overall I would recommend a precision tip hot glue gun/pen. I feel like it would have been much easier to get things to adhere properly. The kitchen included a little file to file the tabs down, if needed. I would recommend you file the tabs beforehand as a precaution. I ran into the issue of one side went in easily, while the other side needed to be filed. Once you get the tabs inserted it's hard to remove them again to file the other tabs. I'm not sure exactly how long it took me to build it. I worked on it a little bit over 3 evenings. Overall I enjoyed my first experience and I'm excited to do another one soon!!

Customer photo review of Yokochō

Very fun kit to assemble. Took me about 8 hours to complete. Thoroughly did enjoy making this and it’s very cute to look at afterwards. Be very careful with securing the smaller pieces into place, I did break 1 piece that did not come with a backup. I was able to glue it back together but it was a pain due to the size. The light sensor also did not work out where it says to place it in the instructions, so i ran it to the backdoor where the battery case was held. As others stated in other reviews, do not glue or fully affix something before fully reading the instructions. It is very easy to miss a step or misunderstand what they are trying to show in the pictures. I forgot to remove the film from some of the window PVC but it still looks just as nice. Take your time and have fun with it! This product functions exactly how it is advertised and would buy another one! Highly reccomend for a fun night in.

Customer photo review of Yokochō

Assembled this during Christmas break with my teenager. It took us roughly two hours from start to finish while watching a movie in the background. We are classic book lovers in our family and you’ll often find us perusing bookstores wherever we go. We even make it a point to find bookstores while on vacatIon to find a vintage book as a souvenir. This delightful japanese alley will add a fun piece of decor to our home library. We appreciated that extras of some of the smallest pieces were included in case any broke during construction, though we didn’t need any of them. Pieces fit snuggly and were measured precisely. Glue is not included, but we already had liquid glue on hand. A pair of scissors is handy to have available, as well. Assembly instructions were clear and quality of materials were better than expected for this price point. Lighting works well and the door to replace batteries (not included) is designed with a swinging door and locking mechanism that is unique. Would purchase from this company again.

Customer photo review of Yokochō

I really enjoyed this. It was my first book puzzle and I’m happy to say I have a new hobby. The instructions were clear for the most part. Some pieces I did miss because I wasn’t too sure what the directions meant. But it was fixable. The little light is so cute. I can’t wait to try another one.

Yokochō

Can't wait to start putting this together. These miniature book stores are darling. Warning: Putting this together can drive you crazy. In a good way.

Yokochō

I love making these little projects and having the finished product is satisfying!

Yokochō

If you like building things similar to this you’re gonna love this. It was a little difficult at first and some of the pieces are quite small but you get the hand of it as you go. The quality is quite nice. I like that the light is easily accessible from the top. Everything was labeled and easy to follow.

Yokochō

I will be ordering another set. I was able to finish this in a few hours it was pretty easy. I loved the puzzle time.

Yokochō

Bought it for my wife as a hobby project. Some parts didn't well and a couple of items in the instructions could not be found on the press out part sheets. Overall, she enjoyed putting it together and it looks nice in the bookshelf.

Yokochō

Overall, I love how it looks and I enjoyed building it so it gets a recommendation from me.

Yokochō

Melted my stress level away

Yokochō

LOVED IT! The pieces fit together well (not flimsy). The instructions were clear and the finished product is beautiful.

Yokochō

This was such a fun and adorable project! My only advice would be to lightly file the connecting pieces beforehand so everything fits smoothly once you start gluing. I assembled and glued it at the same time, which made it a bit tricky in spots. Overall, I loved it and can’t wait to purchase another one!

Yokochō

Fantastic quality and so easy to put together…

Yokochō

I love their products. Most book nooks are really complicated to assemble but not these. Not only are the designs really beautiful, the wood is super sturdy and the pieces fit together perfect.

Yokochō

This was so fun to paint and make!
